ABSTRACT

Aims: Relative's Perspective Scale of Embalmment is an innovative scoring tool born out of curiosity to address the limitations in preservation of tissue and embalming of human remains in an attempt to better anatomic sciences. Objectives: Specifically, emphasis is on acceptability and satisfaction of embalmed body by the relatives, suitability of mortuary for cadaver acquisition in research and training, and validation of the scoring tool by different mortuary institutions across the globe.

Methods: The scoring tool was developed solely from a psychological 7-item scale of relationship satisfaction with modification and addition up to 10-item scale. Data in pilot study collated and entered into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 21) for analysis of means, frequency, Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance with 95% confidence Interval and Cronbach's alpha. Statistical significance was taken as p < 0.05. Results: Computed into three forms (A, B and C). A is for the relation of the dead, B for the staff and C for registry/audit. The final assessment ranges from the worst to the best. From pilot study, there was a final judgment to 'modify mortuary operation'. Concordance of items on recognition, relationship and embalmed centres respectively proved statistically-insignificant. That of satisfaction was statistically-significant. Cronbach's alpha value affirmed this study as a 'Good' exercise.

Conclusion: The scoring tool is simplified to be handled by the relatives of the dead to judge the embalming process. This system of scoring further enhances bequeathing. The scoring system is advocated for auditing of embalming both in developing and developed nations, perhaps, after validation if need be.
